Painting was something my mother did for quite a long time. One year a few of my friends and I were getting together just to spend time with each other when I asked one of them that knew how to paint which is Diana Monte to teach us. I wanted to see if I had my mom’s talent and actually wanted us to paint a mural on my living room wall. We started on canvas and ever since then have fallen in love with painting landscapes, seascapes as well as the wonderful beauty of New Mexico’s different cultures as seen in the buildings etc….I love working with oil and have a passion of creating vibrant colors in my paintings. I’ve done a number of commissioned pieces and have shown my work privately. I live in the Northeast Heights and can be found either painting, enjoying my back yard or up in the mountains in our RV enjoying nature.

“I paint in a contemporary style, sometimes bordering on abstract, which allows me the freedom to create in a way that conveys emotion to the viewer…soft, impressionistic, transparent, vulnerable, spiritual, full of beautiful colors…these are all words I would use to describe my work…it is experimental and many of the techniques I use are unique to my own style, having discovered them on my own in my studio.”

I was raised on a farm in Iowa where I was surrounded by animals, woods, creeks and cornfields. I have had a passion for drawing since the moment I was born. As early as kindergarten, my teacher praised my drawings and my creative use of color. Drawing became my favorite pastime in history class! My love of nature and the outdoors has inspired my work. Images of flowers, turtles, quail, fish, lizards, birds and horses decorate my work. I am interested in the ancient rock art drawings that provide a window to the past. These images found on towering cliffs and canyon walls make me ponder the meaning and spirituality of these galleries. My pots and bowls are one with the tradition and spirit of the great Southwest. I throw and hand build both functional and decorative pieces fired in the mid range temperature. My latest creations are a series of “Bosque Bowls” one of which won Best of Show in the 2003 Celebration of Clay held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bosque is the Spanish word for forest or woods. These bowls were inspired by the 2003 bosque fire along the Rio Grande where hundreds of acres of old cottonwood trees were destroyed by the fire. Where once groves of lush, graceful cottonwoods thrived, now lays only the charred remains. The images of these magnificent trees will live on in my “Bosque Bowls”.

My love for art began at a young age and has consisted of many mediums during my life. Sketching and doodling continually. My uncle was a master wood carver and wood turner from Hillsboro NM. Where he made and sold his pieces to help support the Black range museum, which his wife owned and ran. Giving me my first experience in working with wood. Though I love turning wood, I moved to carving figurines entering my first pieces in the San Juan county fair in Farmington NM, winning, first and second place ribbons. Later I began to work with alabaster and marble, which I continue to do to this day. I also make sculptures out of metal using my welding skills learned while working in the oil field. I began painting using Oils, acrylics, in the last several years, but my preference is acrylics.

I have been painting for twenty years and received an award in 2010 from the Art in the Village Studio Tour for my work. I call my artwork "Organic Abstracts" - within them I explore the chaos out of which creation and order miraculously appear. I use a broad palette and work at a vigorous pace using my instinct, experience and spontaneity. I endeavor to utilize the energy and mystery from the unknown and cast it into the visible world in order to create a visual universe that is unique yet recognizable

Art has been a passion for me since I was in highschool and will continue to be throughout the duration of my life. I recognized early in life that God had blessed me with a special talent and I am so very grateful. When I paint, I try to capture a glimpse of the beauty found in nature and convey it on canvas. I enjoy playing with color and light in breathtaking landscapes, in florals or whatever may capture my attention. I have done numerous commissioned works and participate in Studio Tours. I live in the North Valley of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque where I can be found busily painting in my studio or working outside in my yard.

From a very young age I have had a special affinity for animals. As the daughter of an equine veterinarian I have grown to love and appreciate the creatures that enrich our lives. I am particularly fond of painting horses, not only for their beauty, but out of a deep respect for their impact on my life. Horses have played a crucial role in my family's livelihood for many generations. My paintings are a tribute to these iconic creatures. My beadwork designs on animal skulls reflect my life-long interest in ancient and tribal art. I am especially intrigued by the concept of animal totems and spirit guides. Beadwork appeals to my meticulous nature and each piece is crafted with great detail and precision. I draw inspiration from various cultures, but each beaded design is entirely unique.

Photographs connect us powerfully, viscerally to a place, a time, an event . . . . can spark curiosity, serenity, sorrow, awe. I'm always delighted to photograph a cloudy sky. Having grown up in the arid Southwest, I treasure even the whisper of water. The textures and rhythms of our planet – in rocks, cliffs, trees, oceans – enthrall me, leave me musing about the eons it took for our mountains to grow, our rivers to find their paths, the infinite number of times waves have broken on an outcropping.
